Would You Like To Clear Up That Acne?
I have been participating in The Skin Games, an annual event where more than 1000 estheticians from the US and several foreign countries meet to showcase their results, continue their skin care education, learn about new techniques and products,
and mingle with others in the skin care profession. The highlight of the event is an award competition for estheticians with the most successful demonstrable improvement in their client’s skin condition. Participating estheticians present a case study in one of five categories to a judging panel of experts in the industry. Each esthetician has a client with a challenging skin condition, has customized a treatment plan for that client, has recorded eight weeks of treatment, and then submits to intensive questioning regarding the treatment.
I competed in the last two competitions, was a finalist in the acne category in 2016, and took second place in the hyper-pigmentation category this year. Some pictures of my case studies for both competitions are shown H
The next event of The Skin Games will take place in early 2018, and I have decided to compete in the acne category again and shoot for first place. So I will be looking for suitable candidates with severe acne conditions to be my case subjects. An ideal candidate would have severe acne that has not responded to prior treatment, and who is not currently under a physician’s care for treatment of that condition. There are no restrictions on age, sex or ethnicity but it will be necessary to commit to an intensive eight-week program. For that reason, busy people with tight school or work commitments may find it difficult to complete the program.
My case subjects will receive eight consecutive weeks of complimentary in-clinic treatments and consultations (valued at $2500) but, so they have some skin in the game so to speak, will be required to purchase and properly use home care products that I provide. The cost of these products is usually about $1000. There will be no need to travel to The Skin Games venue for the competition judging, but it will be necessary to agree to photographs and videos throughout the treatment period for submittal to The Skin Games judging panel. These may also be posted in my social media and advertising; in any case, anonymity will be preserved and last names will not be used.
If you (or a family member or friend) are interested in resolving a chronic and severe acne condition, my case study program may be a great opportunity. Simply contact me on info@TamarasSkincare.com, and describe your skin situation (photographs would be very helpful) and tell me when the problem began, what remedies and products/medications have been tried and how well they worked out, and why you would like to be considered for the case study. If you seem to be a good case-study candidate, I’ll contact you for further discussion, answer your questions, and set up a free consultation.

Learn how you can use a fork or spoon to help get the fluid you need
Think hydration — and you probably think water, the body’s essential fluid. But did you know you can eat your H2O too?
That’s when you choose foods that are high in water content.
For example, some varieties of fruit and veggies are more than 85 percent water. On hot days, these foods — along with other fluids — can help you stay hydrated. And there’s a bonus: Water-rich fruits and veggies can also help replace key minerals (electrolytes) — which your body sheds when you sweat.
Enjoy a thirst-quenching menu
When the temperature rises, make a splash in your daily diet with these tasty ideas:
Super salads. Watermelon, oranges, tomatoes, cantaloupe, berries, celery and cucumbers are all flush with fluid. These water-rich foods make great low-calorie snacks too!
Berry-delicious smoothies. Add berries — fresh or frozen — to low-fat or fat-free yogurt or milk. Puree in a blender.
Summer salsas. These can be made from vegetables, fruits or a combination of both. Enjoy your favorite variety as a snack — dip into it with cut-up veggies or whole-grain pita chips. Or top grilled fish or chicken with it. Have a sweet tooth? Give orange or pineapple salsa a try.
Chilled soups. You can serve these as a light meal — or as an appetizer or dessert. Here are three cool and soothing options:
- Gazpacho. A summertime favorite that’s typically rich in tomatoes, cucumber, onion, bell pepper and garlic.
- Vichyssoise. This creamy French classic is made with pureed potatoes and leeks. To keep it on the healthful side, use low-fat, low-sodium chicken broth. For an even creamier soup, stir in a little plain low-fat yogurt or low-fat sour cream.
- Fruit soups. Strawberries, raspberries and cantaloupe puree nicely. See “Chilled melon soup” for a recipe to try.
Frozen nibbles. Freeze grapes or berries. Grab them for a quick and cold snack.
More hints on hydration
Perhaps you’re wondering, How much water do I need? Maybe you’ve heard it should be eight glasses a day. Actually, there’s no set amount that’s right for everyone.*
Staying hydrated is important, though. So carry a refillable water bottle with you — and sip from it throughout the day. Don’t wait until you’re thirsty.
Bored with the same old water supply? Give it a twist with a wedge of lemon or lime — or a splash of 100 percent fruit juice. Be sure to wash your water bottle daily.
Remember, heat can be a hazard
To learn more about safety in hot weather, visit the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention website at cdc.gov. You can also check the weather and heat index in your area — and see heat advisories — at weather.gov.
In hot weather, do keep an especially close eye on older people, people with health conditions and young children — and make sure they stay hydrated. They’re at the highest risk of heat-related illness.
*Hydration needs can vary — based on health conditions you have and medications you’re taking. Talk with your doctor about what’s right for you.

I am often asked how I got into this business of helping people look and feel better. I would like to say that my career choice was the result of a well-thought-out trajectory or a mid-night dream-induced epiphany – alas, that would not be the truth.
In reality, I wandered into it. At the time (2000), I just knew that I needed to do something that was involved in helping other lives.
Friends and family felt that whatever I did it had to be hands-on, serene and tie into my desire to be self employed. One day, a friend and I went for facials. At lunch, after our facials, we looked at each other and quickly said that’s it!! All the elements were there, beauty, serenity, helping others, self-employed. Soon i was enrolled at a local community college esthetiques program
After passing the State Board examinations I was fortunate to be offered a room to rent. AfterI purchasing equipment and products, Tamara’s was born.
In this business, constant advanced education is essential so I am always learning the latest, greatest and most advanced techniques and processes. Fast-forward to 2002, I received a brochure from The Sisters of Saint Joseph offering a hands-on relaxation technique called Reiki. What a great add to skin care treatments I thought and enrolled. After seeing the initial relaxing and centering results on me and my clients, I wound up taking all courses offered all the way to becoming a Reiki master. My clients have been benefitting ever since.
My facial services have always included some sort of massage; usually feet. Whatever the massage, my clients always commented how good the massage felt. Bolstered by compliments, i enrolled in several massage classes to develop proper technique. Again, a brochure arrived in the mail. This time the brochure was from the American Academy of Reflexology. Now an opportunity to learn a quality, healing, balancing foot, hand and ear massage. More than 400 hours of training later and National Certification I give the best foot, hand and ear Reflexology treatment in town.
Many cities include Reflexology in their definition of massage. I love doing Reflexology along with my skin care services. So, i took the required courses and am now a state licensed massage practitioner as well as a state licensed esthetician.
Looking back on how this career started, what I see in common is that I pursued what I thought would fulfill and improve me therefore my service to my client’s. Learning how to offer beneficial skin care services, while centering and relieving stress in my clients. These skills bring so much relief and pleasure to others harmonized with a core desire of mine to help people feel better. It can’t get much better than that.
